Why LGBTQ+ Treatment Matters

LGBTQ+ individuals deserve care that honors who they are. Yet too often, they face bullying, family conflict, or isolation that puts their mental health at risk. Studies show that LGBTQ+ adolescents experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation compared to their peers.

At Ridge RTC, we offer specialized residential treatment for LGBTQ teens (ages 12-17) and emerging adults (ages 18–20). Each provides clinically guided, identity‑affirming support in an environment where safety and belonging come first. Our focus is on helping young people stabilize, regain emotional balance, and strengthen confidence in who they are.

What is LGBTQ+ Adolescent Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment provides 24‑hour support in a structured, homelike environment where teens can focus on healing and recovery. For LGBTQIA+ youth, this means receiving comprehensive mental health care that affirms their identity while addressing underlying conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or self‑harm.

Affirming care differs from non‑affirming programs because we see identity as something to respect, rather than something to change. At Ridge RTC, mental health comes first, and every treatment plan is designed to support the whole teen (mind, body, and identity).

Our LGBTQIA+ Affirming Treatment Approach

Affirming treatment means your teen receives clinically sound care from professionals who understand the importance of identity and belonging. Our team integrates therapeutic expertise with genuine respect to create an atmosphere that’s both structured and compassionate.

  • We draw on evidence‑based modalities such as CBT, DBT, and trauma‑informed therapy to treat emotional and behavioral conditions.
  • Individualized care plans address the specific stressors each teen faces, from anxiety to family conflict.
  • Staff receive specialized training in LGBTQIA+ affirmative practices so that names, pronouns, and lived experiences are always acknowledged.
  • Family therapy and education help build communication and understanding at home, laying the groundwork for ongoing support.

Daily Life in Residential Treatment

Daily Life in Residential Treatment

Each client begins with a complete assessment, followed by an individualized treatment plan that guides their time in residence. The schedule is built around therapy as the foundation of care:

  • Individual therapy at least three times per week
  • Daily group sessions (typically three per day) focused on DBT skills, CBT strategies, trauma processing, and peer connection
  • Weekly family therapy, to strengthen communication and build understanding at home
  • Weekly psychiatric sessions, including medication management when appropriate

Besides therapy, every Ridge campus encourages healthy living and self‑discovery. Clients participate in physical exercise, balanced nutrition, and mindfulness or creative activities that help them reconnect with body and mind.

Our New Hampshire location, set on 350 serene acres, incorporates outdoor experiences like hiking, biking, yoga, and art to complement traditional therapy. In Maine, our 400‑acre mid‑coast campus provides an immersive short‑term environment emphasizing stability, community, and confidence-building through group support and supervised activities.

Whether indoors or out, every part of the day supports healing from mental health challenges and the development of lasting habits. Teens and young adults leave Ridge not only more stable, but better equipped to live independently, advocate for themselves, and maintain balance in daily life.

Preparing Teens for Life After Treatment

Preparing Teens for Life After Treatment

When treatment ends, support continues. Before discharge, each client collaborates with their therapist and family to develop an aftercare plan fit to their needs. That might include outpatient therapy, academic reintegration support, or ongoing peer support.

Rather than redefining who they are, this stage is about reinforcing what they’ve learned: confidence, emotional regulation, and self‑trust. Teens and young adults leave Ridge RTC with practical tools to navigate challenges and a stronger sense of self to carry into everyday life.
