Guided by licensed mental health professionals and certified equine specialists, our EAP program combines evidence-based therapeutic practices with hands-on horse care. Through supervised interactions, teens develop crucial life skills such as responsibility, emotional regulation, and healthy communication.

The Ridge’s approach includes both individual and group sessions, helping teens work through personal challenges while building social skills in a supportive, nature-based environment. Horses’ innate ability to respond honestly and intuitively to human emotions provides immediate feedback, creating powerful moments of self-awareness and lasting positive change. Frequently Asked Questions

Outpatient programs typically offer one or two sessions per week, with teens returning home each day. Residential treatment removes them from the environment contributing to their struggles and surrounds them with clinical support around the clock. At The Ridge Maine, teens receive a minimum of three individual therapy sessions per week, three daily group therapy sessions, weekly family therapy, and weekly psychiatric support, a level of clinical intensity that outpatient care cannot match. The structured daily schedule, therapeutic community, and 24/7 access to staff create conditions for deeper, more sustained progress.

Yes, in many cases. The Ridge Maine is in-network with Aetna, Carelon, Magellan, Multiplan, and Optum, and works with out-of-network benefits and Single Case Agreements when direct contracts are not in place. Please note: we do not accept MaineCare, Medicaid, or Medicare. Contact our admissions team or complete an insurance verification form to understand your specific coverage before beginning the process.

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a clinical modality in which licensed therapists and certified equine specialists guide structured interactions between teens and therapy horses. Horses respond honestly and intuitively to human emotional states, providing immediate, non-judgmental feedback that many teens find more accessible than traditional talk therapy. Through sessions focused on groundwork, horse care, and structured exercises, teens develop emotional regulation, responsibility, healthy communication, and self-awareness: skills that transfer directly into their relationships and daily lives. At The Ridge Maine, EAP is offered in both individual and group formats and is a core component of the residential program.

Residential treatment is generally appropriate when a teen’s challenges are severe enough that they cannot be safely or effectively managed at home or in a less intensive setting. Common indicators include persistent safety concerns such as self-harm or suicidal ideation, significant impairment at school or home, previous treatment that has not produced improvement, or a home environment that is reinforcing the teen’s struggles. Our admissions team can help assess clinical fit during an initial conversation: there is no obligation to enroll.

Our admissions team is available 24/7 and can often move quickly depending on current availability. The process begins with an initial conversation, followed by insurance verification and a clinical assessment to confirm fit. In some cases, families can complete this process and begin the transition within days. We encourage families to reach out as soon as they recognize a need: earlier contact gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful, individualized plan for your teen’s arrival.
